Plentycast June 2013 (Part 2)

Well, it goes before saying that a part 2 will follow a part 1 and following on from yesterday's post here it is, the second set of songs that the 3 of us picked and had a chat about round at Brian's flat.

There's no need for a long introduction so let's get right round to it...

Plentycast - June 2013 (Part 1)

And so we go out on tour for the first of 2 podcasts recorded over some beers and Jaffa Cakes in the living room of our pal Brian McK.

We arrived in Glasgow to find a beautiful, sunny day and as we trooped up to Brian's flat from the train station the leafy streets of the west end were showing the area at its best. So, what makes more sense than sitting inside and listening to some music and talking about it?

We had picked 20 songs so they were split into two parts so as to avoid an epic listen for the legions of people who tune in every month. Don't say we're not good to you...

Thanks to Brian for hosting us and for helping choose the songs we're about to play for you. Click on Jocky's face to take you there...

Plentycast - May 2013

I never know what to write during these introductions and today is no different. How many times can you say here's some songs by some bands with some inane chat in between them?

Anyway, welcome to May's podcast and remarkably enough it is taking place in May. So, what do you need to know this month? There is a high biscuit quotient. John regales us with some Gaelic. I have a new chair. It's all pretty riveting stuff. However, and as per usual, the music is the star of the show and we've got some pretty great songs for you this month. Some old, some new, one not even released yet. It'll never last...

On we go then...

Plentycast - April 2013

Well, after a period of inactivity comes a period of activity I guess. We're now all caught up and are actually recording and releasing the April podcast in April! Riches indeed...

I will say however that the aforementioned period of activity does bring its pressures in having to think about having enough tracks to play within a short time frame of each other so I don't know how those weekly podcasters do it! Maybe I should just go and buy more records or something but I fear that I will continue to be distracted by sporting events on the TV and the like so don't spend enough time listening to newer music. And this coming the week after Record Store Day as well... Mind you, it's "shop" and not "store" but that's a whole other story...

Anyway, on you go -

Plentycast - March 2013

Well, we're trying our best to catch up as best we can so here's the March podcast. In April...

This was recorded right after we finished the February podcast (in April) and contains the usual mix of guid tunes and inane chat. Alas, as you'll hear, we have to remember too many good people that are no longer with us - I know it seems trite to play these songs at this time but we do so out of love and respect to the music that they have given us and I hope it's appropriate to do so by appreciating the music that they've created.

Since we recorded the podcast, the news has broken that Chi Cheng, the former bass player of Deftones who'd been in a coma and then a partially conscious state since a horrific car crash a few years ago, has also passed away. We played a more recent Deftones song on this podcast but would like to remember his playing on earlier recordings. RIP Chi, our thoughts are with your family and friends.

Plentycast - February 2013

Yes, it's the February 'cast. In April...

Welcome back and it appears we're over our unintentional hiatus. Thanks again to our pal Iain H for manning the fort last time around and I'm sure it won't be the last time you hear his dulcet tones on one of these here podcasts.

So, a few of these songs you were meant to hear in February before I got defeated by technology and then we got defeated by life (but that's a whole other story...) turn up again and there's a few additions to round it up and bring it all together. I think this is a good 'un this month and I hope you agree and enjoy the songs we've picked. You'll see there's something from that up and coming Liverpool band The Beatles. Fingers on the pulse as ever here at PS Towers...

Stay tuned for the March 'cast. Also in April...

Plentycast - January 2013

Hello listeners and welcome back to our irregularly scheduled podcasts...

However, we intend to be a bit more regular from now on. The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that the title of this post includes a month therefore you correctly can deduce that we will be going into a monthly cycle with the podcasts from here forward in an attempt to do what we failed to do last year and record more than a token few.

Anyway, I'd love to say that there's a lot of exciting new things about the podcasts in 2013 but alas that isn't the case. Playing songs and talking pish, there you go...

Without further ado then. See you in February! Honest...

Plentycast #36

Hello listeners, we're back back back... or something...

I'm sure you missed us during our (unscheduled) five-month hiatus, a hiatus caused by... I don't know what caused it really, there were perhaps a few reasons that we may not go into here.

Anyway, nothing really has changed. Me and John pick some songs then we talk about them, and possibly go on unrelated tangents. It's right where we left off really, but I've bought some records in the interim period and tracks from a few of those appear on this particular programme. Buying records is a good thing, I heartily recommend it, including the ones you're about to listen to.

About which... on you go!

Plentycast #35 - The Lo-Fi Bri Cast

And so my birthday weekend starts in earnest with another of our guest casts. Joining us at PS Towers is our pal Brian McKinnon from Glasgow who did a grand job in picking the songs for your enjoyment. We've been trying to limit recent casts to 90 minutes or so but we made an exception for Brian - I hope you can find 127 minutes to listen to some fine, fine tunes.

You'll see we sprung a surprise on John and added a Sawyer song to the mix. I always thought Brian had heard them but it turns out he hadn't! It's only a minute and a half long but what a minute and a half it is. I think we may do another cast with Brian again, probably this time through in Glasgow so what you are about to listen to is the "home leg". I fear we may need to up our game as Brian may have nicked an away goal to take into the second leg. We'll let you know when that takes place, soon hopefully!

Well, on you go...

Plentycast #34

I don't know if the unseasonably good weather is getting to us or not but there was a nice bit of forgetfulness halfway through the latest podcast. Maybe our minds will return once the weather cools down a bit (which looks like it could be as soon as this coming weekend...)

Anyway, unlike us I know, but I digress. We spend the first couple of minutes of the show talking about the man you see on every Mixcloud embed, namely the great Jocky Wilson and what he meant to us growing up in Fife in the 1980s. It's a trite thing to say that this one's for you but I guess it is in this case.

We plough a usual furrow of old and new tracks and I think I may have got the nationality wrong of New Bleeders so apologies for that if it is the case. However, it's a cracking good tune so I hope I'm forgiven. It's a podcast full of cracking tunes so we hope you enjoy.

Do it for Jocky and click on the great man...

Plentycast #33 - The Jeff Mangum ATP Cast

Hello listeners, we're back after a couple of months of inactivity (slackness in the blackness!) and what a splendid show we have for our return.

Over the weekend, John and me were down at the Jeff Mangum curated ATP with a host of others and we decided to record a podcast while we were there. This was recorded yesterday lunchtime in the vast Skyline Pavilion space in Butlins in Minehead - there were no bands playing in there over the weekend so it became this huge hang-out place instead. It seemed like a nice place to do it so away we went.

We're joined by a plethora of special guests popping in and out of proceedings - you'll remember Thom Allott and Andy Cleary from the Fence Cast last year. Also joining us is Jonathan Greer from Slow Thrills zine, Will Fitzpatrick from The 255s who we played last year and last, but not least, our pal and chalet mate Lo-Fi Brian McKinnon.

Everybody picked a couple of songs by bands from the weekend, I put them in roughly date order as to when they played and since it was recorded on the Sunday we could only look forward to the bands playing that day. I can since confirm that Versus and Sebadoh were fucking awesome and John would say the same thing about the former and also Roscoe Mitchell too. Looking back the day after the weekend before, I can honestly say that I enjoyed this weekend very much even though at the time of writing I'm dead tired.

Anyway, I hope we are able to give you a flavour of what went on. Featuring some ATP hubbub in the background (or it could be a knitting machine...) and the interminable clack and clink of the air hockey machines. Enjoy!

Plentycast #32

Thae Christmas holidays, they dinnae fair take it oot o' ye... Or something...

I don't mind saying but recording a two and a half hour podcast in one sitting is a bit of a struggle, by the end of it I was flagging and ready for my bed! However, I managed to soldier on to the end, such is the dedication to the cause...

Aye, it's me and John playing songs and talking about them in between them. Plus ca change...

Plentycast #31

a.k.a The "Hinch" Cast...

Well, what goes on on tour normally stays on tour but this is a wee bit different. We found ourselves down in London to see Superchunk at the Scala in Kings Cross and were able to catch up with our pal Iain H, who if you don't know already, used to play in Sawyer with John and now plays in Part Chimp.

Iain very graciously put us up for the second night we were down and so we took the opportunity to record a 'cast with him. Iain picked the songs and we had a chat about them, such is the raison d'etre of this thing we do. I hope you've got a spare 138 (!) minutes to listen as there's some fine, fine choices (and fine, fine chat) on display.

Thanks again to Iain for doing this, it was a lot of fun and I hope that comes across.

Plentycast #30

a.k.a Here's One For The Teenagers...

We're nothing if not on the ball and hip to all the latest musical trends at PC Towers and so we present to you a special podcast of our favourite Creation / Sub Pop /Pacific North West tunes. There is nothing here beyond 1996 so if you're looking for something up-to-date then I'm afraid you're in the wrong place! However, if these songs are new to you then you're in the right place!

This 'cast was inspired by recent TV watching and book reading and cooked up over a Mosque Kitchen curry one Friday night so you have BBC4 to thank for showing the Creation Records doc, the Pearl Jam doc and No Nirvana repeat and me for reading Mark Yarm's Seattle music scene tome Everybody Loves Our Town. It's a whopping 1hr 53mins long so pull up a comfy chair and put the kettle on!

We'll return to our usual fare at a later date. Oh wait, this is quite like our usual fare...

Hmm...

...a.k.a. The Fence (and others) cast...

And so we decamp to Cellardyke in the East Neuk of Fife for a special edition of the podcast. We're joined by a myriad of characters along the way at the kitchen table (and thanks to Jen, Thom, Sarah, Kelly and Lynsey for chipping in along the way) but the main guest is Andy Cleary of Club Smart Patrol in London.

The main reason for this special show is the Fence Records Hott Loggz all-day gig that we were all attending so I thought it would be good to do a Fence themed podcast. Andy chose all of the songs we played and did a fine, fine job, there's 7 Fence, or Fence-affiliated acts and 3 songs off recent LPs that are tickling his fancy at this particular time.

Stay tuned too for 25 Things You Didn't Know About Zooey Deschanel and a list of our order from the Anstruther Fish Bar...

Hey ho, let's go...

Plentycast #28

It's lucky we don't broadcast this live as you would have heard a couple of snafu's in this latest programme. Yes, let's speak into the microphone when the switch on the microphone is in the "off" position. That makes sense doesn't it...?

So, history is edited out, it's as if it never happened and we move on with nobody getting hurt. I think this edition is the perfect mix of loud, quiet and everything in between and it flows quite nicely. Us being us, we got distracted a couple of times and ended up digressing off the subject but hey where's the fun in sticking to the topic?

Well, we got to grips with the technology in the end and I hope the songs speak for themselves. Not quite the amount of new stuff as in the previous show but as John's fond of saying from time to time "a song could be new to somebody somewhere".

Let's do this thing...

Plentycast #27

Ah, the perils of technology listeners...

We first tried to record this on Monday night (the 10th) but we had a total 'mare with the mic so all the vocal bits sounded like the production of Carcass's Reek Of Putrefaction LP (i.e. not good). That meant a re-record as I didn't want to put something out that sounded pretty bad so we come to tonight instead. The mic issue was resolved, we used a new bit of software that meant we could record it totally live (instead of in a cut & paste stylee as before) so that cut down a lot on editing and post-production so here we are publishing the podcast on the same night it was recorded! Riches indeed...

Including FIVE songs from 2011! A feat that may never be repeated in all likelihood! Unprecedented scenes at PS Towers this evening. Jocky got so excited that he nearly left his council flat in Smeaton to have a game of arrows. Nearly...

On you go...

Plentycast #26

And so we're back after an unplanned break (mainly due to me not being well and not really having the energy to put everything into a podcast). I'm still not feeling 100% so the majority of the songs are John's choices but you have to say that he's come up trumps with what we have for you this time around. Mind you, any chance we have of including a Withered Hand song or a Superchunk song is going to be taken! They are good 'uns as well so that doesn't hurt!

Apologies once more for coughing a lot (an annoying consequence of this was me missing a couple of weekend festivals I was looking forward to and which probably would have been featured on this particular edition of PC). Such is the life of an old man...

Aye, the nights are fair drawing in...

Plentycast #25

And so we reach a quarter century! Riches indeed.

We celebrate it by swearing a lot. You can take the boys out of Fife etc... So yes, podcast #25 features some words that you may find objectionable but it also contains some songs that you may find quite palatable. I hope it's obvious that it's the music which is the star of these podcasts, we try and put together playlists that flow quite nicely and feature songs that are complementary - you just have to put up with us two talking pish in between them!

So, listen on for hipsters and Eska, choruses that end too soon, Ian Svenonius and Kevin Rowland and the curious tale of John Stanier's trousers...

Away you go!

Plentycast #24

Well, we return to our previously advertised schedule with a range of songs from 1956 right up to the present day. As I say at the start of the show, pretty much everything we do is with a nod in the direction of the much missed John Peel so I hope he'd approve of playing one of his favourite acts along with a track from one of his sessions. Because of him, I always refer to records as "LPs" and if there's a slight inflection in my voice then that's the effect he's had on me. Here's to you sir. And here's to our podcast #24 -

Hit it!
